It was a fortified town, and there are remains of the Medieval wall around the church and the name of the Plaça de Castell (Castle Square) still exists. This castle was the property of the barons of Cabrenys. |

In the middle of the Plaza Mayor there is a great iron bar stuck in the ground, known as the Maça de Rotllà (Mace of Roldán), which, according to tradition, was thrown by the hero Roldán from Ceret or from the castle of Cabrera, from where you have a lovely view over the Empordà region. |

Around the Plaza Mayor there are three gateways dating from the 15th Century. In the Plaza del Castillo, joined to the wall, is the prison. The church of Sant Martí de Maçanet is the parish church of the town. |
