Its proximity to the border has meant that its clean streets have a certain French feel about them. The town is presided over by the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Agullana, a historical-artistic monument with a beautiful Romanesque belltower, which has two storeys of arcades. An old livestock and agricultural town (the cork industry was developed in its district), it has a growing source of income from summer tourism. In the municipality we can find the Wine Museum and the Suro Museum (cork). |

There are notable modernist buildings in the town, such as the Casa Estela, the Casa Parellada-Vilella, the Sociedad de la Concòrdia, the Lluís Maria Vidal schools and the Gomis residence, which was closed down around 1970, and which they now want to re-open.The Mas Perxés gave refuge, at the beginning of 1939, to an important group of politicians and intellectuals of the Catalan Autonomous Government heading for exile. |

Dating from prehistoric times are the menhirs of Los Palaus and La Pedra Dreta, the dolmens of La Barraca del Lladre, Jaça d’en Torrent and Can Puig. In 1924 a hallstattica necropolis (late Bronze Age-early Iron Age, from the 8th-6th Centuries BC) was discovered in the grounds of Can Bech de Baix. The chapel of Santa Eugènia can also be found here. |
