description

Natural Area of Natonal Interest. The green lung of the Alt Empordą extends some 25 kilometres from the Perthus pass to the Mediterranean, separating the plain of the Alt Empordą from the Roussillon.

The eastern end of the Pyrenees separates the Alt Empordą from the Roussillon and contains over 130 megalithic monuments ( including dolmens and menhirs ), Romanesque churches, castles and historical and frontier villages.

The Albera is divided into two areas: Requesens-Baussitges and Sant Quirze -Balmete. Because of the distances it is advisable to do the route by car. We can start at Garriguella and visit the Turtle Breeding Centre, where indigenous species are conserved.

We continue by Vilamaniscle to visit the Romanesque Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera. We then go on to Espolla, where there is the information Centre of the Albera Natural Area, and then to Sant Climent Sescebes: at the entrance to the village we follow the sign Vilatorlķ-castell de Requesens and take the forest track up to the Requesens Castle, which can be visited by asking at the café.

Afterwards we take the road to Cantallops, which leads to the megalithic complex called Els Estanys, where we can see three menhirs and two dolmens: a corridor tomb and a vestibulewell.
