description

Although Verges has not exceeded the population it had in the 17th century, the desire to live in better homes and the rise of small industries drove a new urban expansion in the late 19th century, especially starting in the 1860s.The growth followed the layout of the roadways that converged on the outskirts of the town, forming new streets that link the old village with these roadways (Padrˇ, Francesc Cambˇ, EmpordÓ streets, etc.). Presently, urban expansion is the result of zoning rules that call for the construction of isolated buildings amidst green settings (Rubau residential estate, El Padrˇ, etc.).

La Vall
Formed by two fortified farmsteads, a tiny Romanesque church and an abandoned mill, La Vall is ensconced in a fertile valley limited by the Eocene peaks of the Empordanet area and washed by the La Vall torrent. Sant Pere de la Vall is a Romanesque church with a single nave and semicircular apse, of highly rustic construction dating from the 11th century. Cal Rei and Mas Masseller have rectangular-plan towers believed to date from the 14th-15th century.

In Verges, for instance, the Procession and the Dance of Death are held on the night of Holy Thursday, and are a must see for all visitors.
