description

The largest fortress in Europe.

On the outskirts of the town sits the imposing Sant Ferran castle, which has the form of a star shaped irregular pentagon and a double enclosure of walls. The building was started in 1735. It has a perimeter of 5 kilometres and numerous bastions, moats, drawbridges and a beautiful courtyard of weapons.

On 22 January 1810, General Alvarez de Castro died in the Castle, where he had been kept prisoner by the French after leading the defence of Girona.

The Constituting Committee for the Consortium of Sant Ferrran Castle was set up in 1997 and is made up of represntatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Generalitat Government of Catalonia and the Town Hall of Figueres.
The Committee's task is to draw up the statutes for the Consortium which will decide on the future uses of Figueres Castle.
