description

The Exile Memorial Museum (MUME) promotes recalling the history and memory of our land’s exiles, and particularly the Republican exile that emerged from the outcome of the Civil War of 1936-1939. Exile, however, is a phenomenon of universal proportions that has affected and continues to affect large groups of men, women and children all over the world. The MUME sets out to be a space in which to think back to and undertake a historical reflection in which the example and memory of so many personal, collective and political experiences serve as a testimony to and body of learning for future generations.

Situation - In Catalonia, the memory of Republican exile has been preserved, especially in two large areas. One is Alt Empordà, which was the central scenario of the final stage of the Republican Government of Catalonia and of the retreat of hundreds of thousands of people, including the leaders of the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish Republic and the Basque autonomous government. The other, the Catalonia of the North, which was the first refuge for the great mass of those defeated and that, for many, was also the first experience of the extreme harshness of the new life that awaited them. In both areas, we find many elements evoking those events. So it is not surprising that the place chosen to locate the future museum is the town of La Jonquera.

The theme of the permanent exhibition is the 1939 Republican exile, its antecedents and its most immediate repercussions. Prepared for highly diverse publics, this exhibition offers visitors different levels of interpretation allowing greater or lesser interpretative complexity while never abandoning scientific rigour, recognising of course that this must not be at odds with accessibility. Thus, the audiovisual resources and the different display methods have been fused with more traditional forms, such as explanatory panels or the exhibition of original documents of great historical interest.

The MUME offers a free private tour on the last Sunday of each month at 11am.
It is necessary to confirm by email or phone a few days in advance.
If there are fewer than 10 people, the visit will be postponed until next month.
